As the 1st battalion, The Royal Welsh leave for another tour of Afghanistan Alyn and Deeside prospective Plaid Cymru MP Maurice Jones calls on the Westminster Government to bring the Troops home now.
Speaking to a meeting of Party activists in Caergwrle Mr. Jones said
“Having spoken to many of the lads of the first battalion the first thing that strikes you is their bravery. They are determined to see through this job to the end. They are undaunted by their superior officers saying that they must expect heavy casualties and that they expect this mission to last 15 years.”
“But it also strikes me that some of these young men are going to pay the ultimate price for this mission. If this war goes on for fifteen years how many of our sons are going to be snatched from us in their prime.”
“We in Wales are only 4% of the population of the UK yet we provide 10% of the armed forces. We are sending troops to fight in a war with no exit strategy. Gordon Brown says we need to send larger numbers to reduce casualties’ and his defense minister says we haven’t got enough equipment to increase the numbers, hence they say to troops expect heavy casualties.”
“The reasons behind the invasion have changed on an almost weekly basis. We have been told that it was in opposition to terrorism, human rights, drugs and a host of other headlines. The truth is there is no clear strategy and to continue when there is no inclination as to how long this war will last or how it can be resolved is an act of lunacy.”
