The many concerns expressed by people all over Wales has lead Plaid Cymru Alyn and Deeside Parlementary candidate to issue the following statement.
“The mothers of under fives over the next few weeks will be facing the very difficult decision whether or not to vaccinate their children against swine flu. This decision has not been made any easier by all the misinformation that people are accessing across the internet about this vaccine,”
“I have therfore consulted with Plaid Assembly member and GP Dr Dai Lloyd to find out the facts cocerning this vaccine, and would like to reassure parents as to the safety of this vaccine. The same stringent procedures have taken place in the development of this vaccine as goes into all flu vaccine development and over a million doses have already been administered without a single fatality”.
“On the other hand swine flu itself although relatively harmless to the majority of the population can be very serious and possibly fatal to vulnerable groups such as the old and the young, This is why these groups have been targeted with the vaccine. The threat to these groups is very real. Only last week there was 7 fatalities in Wales alone.”
“While I understand the reluctance of every mother to give an unknown substance to a healthy child, the threat that swine flu posses to the under fives is very real and I would urge all young mothers to go ahead and get their child vaccinated, in fact all people who's immunity is low should be taking the vaccine including pregnant women”
In Britain, one person in two is reluctant about being vaccinated, according to a report published in specialist journal Pulse and more than 5,700 people have died worldwide since swine flu was first discovered in April.
